The public business page of facebook now shows up when indexing your website.

Google makes it easy to show up on their first page within a geographical area by claiming you business address. It is a GREAT tool!

Good summary on basic SEO. For those of us that are doing this on our own due to budget issue, consider SEOMoz. It's worth the subscription.

Thanks for the great advice. Is there anywhere in particular one should start? Or does it depend on your niche market?

These are well known techniques that have been used by SEO firms for a number of years. There are always other criteria which emerge, change, etc. over time. Google, for example, uses over 100 points of criteria to determine a page ranking in their index -- all the more reason to hire a professional with experience and references in the SEO field.

Additional areas to improve ranking in the search engine are as follows:

1) Links in search directories -- especially DMOZ and Yahoo

2) Inbound links from like sites, or sites which have a similar theme. Avoid link farms and web rings when possible. Look for sites which have a high PR in Google, and solid traffic according to Alexa.

3) Use the social media to enhance visibility on the web. Sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. can be quite effective if you know how to use them correctly.

4) Use micro-blogging when possible. Twitter, for example, is the most popular mirco-blogging site. Many people don't know how to use it. However, there are tools like TweetLater.com that can put your tweets on auto-pilot.

5) Write articles (well written, that offer something of value to the reader) and place them into syndication.

6) Create teaser videos and distribute them on YouTube, Google Video, etc.

7) Contribute to blogs on topics related to your expertise. Too many people are writing blogs these days. You don't need to write a blog to be a successful blogger! Look for blogs on your subject area, where your customers hang out and then post replies sharing a little expertise for free. This will help you get lots of visibility for nothing more than your time!

8) Work with social bookmarking -- add it to your site to make it easy for visitors to index your pages.

9) Create an RSS feed so people can track your updates. This is far more effective than the old technique of e-zines.

Like I said, there are many ways that you can gain a top ranking and increase your web traffic/visibility on the Internet. The key to doing so is to make sure you've performed a detailed key phrase analysis and a competitive analysis so you know where there are opportunities for you to capture marketshare (and eyeballs on your site.).

And finally, if you aren't monitoring your web traffic, you should be. There are many buried secrets in your web traffic report. Learn how to read your reports, make sense out of the information and adjust your site accordingly. Do this and you will ultimately make your website a key element in your lead generation and sales efforts.

If you would like more information about the above, you can download my ebook for free at www.capturehits.com/offer. Additionally I have white papers, videos and tools all available free of charge at www.capturehits.com/tools.htm.

Alternately, feel free to connect with me directly and I'm happy to give you some personalized advice -- also free of charge. :)
