Mike,
Great comments. I know a lot of people who don't like to be on proprietary environments like ASP.NET. However, I know a lot of other people who think open source software is full of bugs and has low quality. We mainly use PHP, so I'm your side, but I think there's room for both in this world.

I completely agree about frameworks/applications like Wordpress and other software packages built on top of whatever you are using. I'll try and make hat a subject for a future blog post. Thank you for reading! :)

Why in the world would you want to sign on with the Microsoft proprietary development environment in ASP/.Net? The web was born for openness, and there are are great open solutions for development. PHP, Python, and Ruby are the top language choices, IMHO.

However, the choice of one language or another is only the beginning. There are myriad other elements in what constitutes your development environment and your "platform". These days, you can do an awful lot with Wordpress or Wix while doing almost zero actual coding.

And if you do decide to write your own application, you can get a huge jump start by picking one of the commercially supported frameworks for your application. If you choose a framework, the language choice already has been decided for you.

And if you choose to really write from scratch in any language, you also need to choose your hosting platform, your database, your version control system, etc. etc.

So choosing a web "development environment" involves a great deal more than just nominating a preferred programming language.

Another option is Alpha Five v11. htt://www.alphasoftware.com

It has 50,000 developers and was rated #1 in rapid web development by InfoWorld.

PHP and ASP.Net developers who have made the switch typically find that they can build apps in about 1/5th of the time.

More info is shown here http://alphafiveinfo.blogspot.com/

Yes. As Web developer for the UW-Milwaukee Bookstore, I increased click-through rate to our clearance merchandise pages by 20% after testing various above-the-fold placements of the banner ad one at a time, week by week.

It just so happened that a promotional banner for the bookstore's monthly guest author was distracting from the clearance banner, and so I moved the guest speaker's banner below the fold and gave the clearance banner a brighter border to effectively bring greater attention and click-throughs.

Jackie, generally you can use "common sense" to determine a quality link. For example, a Web site that has no content other than a bunch of random links to Web sites --> not quality. CNN.com news article --> quality. You can also use <a href="http://www.prchecker.info" rel="nofollow">PR Checker</a> to view Google's 1-10 quality ranking of a link source to give you a more finite answer.
